Abstract

Arterial stiffness is a term describing alterations in the mechanical properties of blood vessels according to aging. Measures of arterial stiffness provided useful prognostic information concerning of future cardiovascular events or assessment of the cardiovascular risk. The devices that measure the arterial stiffness can be classified as devices that quantify pulse transit time, analyze the pressure pulse waveform or provide direct estimation of vessel stiffness by the simultaneous assessment of arterial diameter and a corresponding distending pressure. Increased arterial stiffness is also associated with increased risk of ischemic stroke. However, the pathophysiologic effect of arterial stiffness on ischemic stroke is obscure. Future direction is looking forward to establishing improvement of cardiovascular outcome after therapeutic reduction of arterial stiffness.
